After losing the one person she could always depend on, Keira Altman has fled the Capital and its deadly dance of political intrigue. She finds herself instead amidst the perilous jungles of the Southern Shield. Looking for respite and peace from the guilt that haunts her, Keira instead finds a world still on the verge of chaos. Try as she might to avoid the coming onslaught, her fate remains tied in service to Pneumos, a calling she can never truly escape.
Plot
While I felt like I was quickly able to get back into this series as I dove into the sequel to Chaos Looming, it took longer than I expected to figure out how and why Keira ended up where she was at the start of the novel. I also struggled to feel like the plot picked up and had a firm direction for Keira and the rest of the characters. It didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the story and the pacing for the remainder of the story was excellent!
Characters
Often with sequels, it can take some time to feel settled back into the main character’s voice. That was not at all the case for Keira, however. Within the first couple of pages, I immediately felt settled back in Keira’s characters. I was also pleased to see how much she developed within this sequel. The new characters added to the world were interesting and added to the plot.
Setting
One of the most notable aspects of the first novel in this series was the unique magic and rules within the world the author created. This continues to be developed within this novel. We learn more about the origins of the mysterious Legion and their magic. I also appreciated being able to see new places (and times!) from this world that author created.
My Recommendation
Haven Enduring is the second novel in The Legion of Pneumos series and is the sequel to Chaos Looming, which I reviewed last year. The author did an excellent job continuing to develop the main characters and the setting, as well as adding in new places, characters, and technology. I did struggle to find the central plot until later in the novel than I would have expected.
