That day at the First Church of Gracie changed everything for Gem Echols, and not just because Marian and Poppy betrayed them. Forced to use the Ouroboros knife on Zephyr, who had kidnapped their parents, Gem now has the power of the God of Air. While for any other god things might work out okay, the Magician—whose role within the pantheon is to keep the balance—having the power of another god has thrown everything into chaos.
Plot
Ever since I completed the initial book in this series earlier this year, I have been eagerly anticipating the follow-up. The wait was worth it! This book is brimming with numerous unexpected twists and surprises, including a significant plot twist halfway through that caught me off guard. My only issue is that the story occasionally jumps around in time, causing some disorientation.
Characters
I enjoyed reconnecting with the familiar trio from the first book and meeting new characters. It was also nice to learn more about their family, which was not featured in the initial book. Without giving away any spoilers, one of the new characters has a captivating storyline, making me wish for a sequel solely focused on them.
Setting
It's challenging to provide a complete review of the setting without revealing too many details. However, the author delved deeper into the magic system briefly mentioned in the first book, introducing surprises that completely changed my understanding of the story, which I really enjoyed. It was also exciting to see some new places, since the majority of the first book was set in the same town.
My Recommendation
Merciless Saviors concludes the duology that began with Godly Heathens by H.E. Edgmon. This thrilling book is packed with surprises, excitement, and moments of heartbreak. The author skillfully portrays morally ambiguous characters that readers will undoubtedly adore. It is worth noting that this story includes graphic content and numerous trigger warnings, so I advise readers to review them before diving in.
